On April 21st, Jimmy Kimmel and his wife welcomed their 2nd son, William “Billy” Kimmel. The late night host revealed this week on his show that his son underwent emergency open heart surgery due to a severe congential heart defect.

In a very emotional video, Jimmy shared the story of how his son came into the world and how, shortly after birth, the nurse noticed his color was wrong.

Further tests proved that Billy was born with the CHD known as Tetralogy of Fallot. While this is not an uncommon congenital heart defect, it is extremely serious and usually requires multiple surgeries, beginning with the initial open heart surgery to repair the defect.

I have to admit, this was a very difficult video for me to watch as I am the mother of a child born with CHD’s as well.  My daughter was repaired at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital via open heart surgery at 14 days old.

Watching this video, I could feel the fear in Jimmy’s voice, and that was hard for me because it brought back so many memories.  My daughter is now 9, and I have no doubt that little Billy will rally and be fine, especially because he’s being treated by some of the best doctors in the world in Los Angeles.

Watch Jimmy tell the story of his son:

Kimmel has requested that if you want to support the cause, you make donations to CHLA (Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles). Every 1 in 100 babies are born with some type of Congenital Heart Defect. CHD’s are the #1 birth defect.
